About Me | Unfair Stuff | Linux Distros for sale | Direct Connect

So you wanna use Direct Connect?

Well, Direct Connect is by far the best Peer2Peer/Chat Software there is, preceeded only by its predecessor, mIRC... (theres some big words )

Direct Connect or DC as we will call it from now on is a network that has a client which is capable of both IRC and File sharing...

In DC, you connect to different rooms, or Hubs, where you can share files, download files and chat, all in the one application.

As DC is open source there are many different clients and I have listed a few of them below:
PhantomDC++

This is my personal favourite... partly because it is NZ made but mostly because it has great features. It is based on BCDC++, However the programmer, known as Twink is giving up on the project because he doesn't have the time or the motivation to continue. The latest (and probably last) version of it is 0.306 1.19c

This is another good client that I recommend, lots of good features, thats why PhantomDC++ is based on it. Latest version: 0.607b

This is a good one... this is the client many people use simply because it's the first one they find and its the easiest and most stable. Latest version: 0.670
MS++V

This is one of the best known multi-source clients. Multisource means downloading from many sources at one time... I haven't used this client. Latest version:
RMDC++

This is another client I haven't used... it's sposed to be OK but because it hashes every single file, sharing files can take a long time to process... I have also heard many people complaining about it crashing, but you'll have to see for yourself. Latest version: 0.403D[1]

So once you've got yourself a client... click on public hubs and look down the list that appears for some hubs with heaps of users... more users = more files. You can also use manual connect to type in a hub address that you know.

The following hubs are for New Zealand only so if you are in New Zealand, then you won't go over your international data cap because you will only be getting national traffic:
  • silverserver.co.nz:411
  • dc.broadbandnz.net
Click here for a list of New Zealand hubs at hublist.org
This is the New Zealand hublist from www.dcnz.net.nz, the leading site on DC stuff in New Zealand...

You can enter selective hublists into your DC client under the Downloads tab in the settings...
http://www.dcnz.net.nz/publichublist.config is the NZ only hublist from DCNZ.net.nz
http://www.hublist.org/PublicHubList.config.bz2 is the main and default public hublist for worldwide hubs.

So thats basically some of the clients but visit www.zeropaid.com and look at the top P2P programs or do a search for DC. Also, www.sourceforge.net is a good source for this open source software... do a search there.
